Social Media Tips for Small Businesses

Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate with one another – both as individuals and as brands. Having an online social presence is expected by consumers today and even if you are a small business, you can and should be utilizing social media.  

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn – the opportunities and available channels are endless. Each one has its own advantages and challenges, but it’s important to do everything you can to use social media to benefit your business while not taking up too much of your time.

Social media can be intimidating when you are first starting out though, so how should you go about creating a social media strategy?

First, think about your audience.

Who are they? What channels are they on? It’s better to be very good at a few channels than adequate at a lot of them, so by first identifying the who your audience is, you save yourself a lot of time and can better craft your messaging. Once you know about that audience, you’re able to get started.

Personalize your messages to each site.

Even if the content that you choose to share is the same, the messaging should be customized to each social network.  Each platform that your business chooses to utilize should serve a purpose.

Follow the 80/20 rule.

You don’t want to be bombarded with ads and promotional material on social media and neither does your audience. In light of this, 80 percent of your content should be just that – content. Interesting articles related to your industry, local features about your business, and other information your audience would find interesting. 20 percent should be promotional material.

This balance will help your business in developing a less transactional relationship with your audience.

Show personality!

Social media is unique because you have the ability to speak directly to your audience and can show your business personality. People expect a lighter mood online and the barriers of formality are taken down.

Social media is something that should be embraced as it gives your business another avenue to connect with customers. By using it to your advantage, you can grow your business and better serve the people in your community. See you online!
